Death Meets TOGO Team in Angola

1 dead, two or more people injured (provisional estimate). The Angola African Cup of Nations could not have started worse than that. The Togo bus carrying the Togolese selection to Cabinda has been fired on with machine guns. After the savage attack of the Algerian team bus by stone throwing Egyptians fans we now have machine gun attacks by rebel groups. Cabinda is an Angolan province enclaved between Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It produces 70% of Angola’s oil which total output is comparable to Kuwait’s. Cabinda armed militia are fighting for their independence. Angola has been stuck in civil war for more than 30 years. The past few years had given hope for peace and the CAN was a way to mark Angola’s return to some kind of normality. But reality caught back with the country and the innocent Togolese delegation paid the price for it. Should the African FA have allowed the CAN to take place in those conditions? Are politics and business more important than the lives of the players? Officials have questions to answer. The most urgent one being: Must the competition go on after the blood bath? Should it be delayed? Moved to another location?
I wish well to the injured players and my condolences to the murdered driver’s family.

Togo was supposed to begin their Nations Cup campaign against Ghana on 11 January before games against Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast.
