Malawi Vs Algeria – Missed Opportunity

Malawi 3 0 Algeria
Mwafulirwa (17)
Kafoteka (35)
Banda (48

So Algeria started the AFCON with a match against the Flames of Malawi.
Whether because of the Flames or because of the afternoon’s high temperature, one thing is for sure, Algeria has felt the heat! What a disappointing start. Malawi was clearly playing to win whereas it did not seem so from the Algeria side. The greens gave the Flames too much liberty and they used it. The possession of the ball was mainly Malawi’s. The Algerian defence in the 17’ and 35’ was clearly responsible for the goals, Chaouchi making penalising mistakes. Algeria seemed to wake up in the last 20 minutes but that was not enough to shake the solid Malawi defence. The Flames always managed to have several of their players in support to their goal keeper. Fast counter attacks could have helped Algeria score but we only had too few of those.
I am not sure what was going on in Saadane’s mind but he needs to find out what seems to be the problem with team that was just a shadow of itself. Today’s score can only satisfy Algeria’s World Cup group. I hope this disappointing display was the result of the Greens not being able to adapt rapidly enough to the hot and humid condition of Angola after spending time training in chilly conditions in France.

Today was also Ziaya’s opportunity to play. He replaced Saifi in the second half and was behind some good scoring opportunities.

Let’s hope the greens are more focused on 14th January against Mali. They better be as Mali has more potential than Malawi.

Well done Algeria.your 15 minute are over. Welcome back to reality.

  • ghanim

hahahhahahahaha i dont see no goalkeeper celebrating on the woodwork 2day
    haaaaaaaaha
see i knew it algeria cannot play away from home

  • Moe

The sad reality ghanim is that they are a weak team. you know if they dominated the game and lost 1-0 with a lucky goal thats one thing but to get completely dominated and humiliated by an average team is something else…

  • Moe

It is very embarsssing that we lost to this team. we have no excuse to lose to algeria none….

  • Moe

it could have easily been 5-0

  • nokia

regardless theyre going to the wc and ur not ;) if i recall malwai beat egypt in qualifying too,,, algeria did mess up but they can get back on htere feet..

  • Kas

this is what happens when you underate teams. there are no whipping boys at this Afcon.

  • kooora

    Moe and Ghanim

why don’t you guys get it:) we do not care if we gave the game away to Malawi or Zimbabew, what matter to us is to give you guys a spanking whenever we meet, always remember that our goal in life is to spank the Egyptians.

    Again, you guys can celebrate all you want:) the fact and the matter is that we gave you the appropriate spanking that you guys deserved{…}

Again, we do not really care about the AC or the WC for that matter, our joy in life is to keep giving you spanking, and watch you cry like little girls.

  • Kazi

This truly is embarrassing. InshaAllah this will be a wake-up-smack in the face for the players, or Saadane will provide it. Malawi is in no way average, they proved that against Egypt and Ghana, but we still have no reason for losing. Credit to Malawi, they played well. The goals they got, bar the header, were flukey. Chaouchi, however badly he played, must be forgiven. It was only until day before yesterday which he knew he would be playing. He didn’t think he would be playing. Imagine now, he isn’t that experienced, in his first match at the CAN, when he wasn’t supposed to play at all, of course he feels immense pressure and is very scared. I would be too. It is very easy to make mistakes like that. Saifi and Ghezzal did the best they could. Ziaya was impressive despite the loss. Yet again I can only point out Belhadj as the driving force of the team, ironically, not Ziani. But the Malawians did well to shut him down and gave him no room. Insha Allah Yahia and Meghni will return against Mali and Insha Allah we will remind the world that Algeria, like any team, suffers blips, but do not forget that we are still good and should never be considered “over” or “rubbish”. Koora, is that really the only thing that matters to you when it comes to Algerian Football? Do you not wish for progression for the Algerian team. I understand you want Algeria to beat Egypt. All Algerians do, but do you actually not care that we lost 3-0 to Malawi? As for Egypt’s “embarrassing” defeat to Algeria, well to put it plainly: “Algeria beat Egypt when it mattered most, therefore, by method of logic, they deserved it more.” Now, it is time for the likes of Mansouri, Yebda and Ziani to wake up. Egypt was fantastic, but it wasn’t Brazil. Show the rest of the world that if you CAN beat Egypt twice than you can easily beat Angola and Mali as well. I saw the 3-0 scoreline today and I can honestly say it nearly gave me a heart attack. Of course, I only have myself to blame for forgetting never to underestimate a team, no matter who it is. Algeria taught Egypt that lesson. May I just make a point, earlier this evening Ivory Coast drew 0-0 with Burkina Faso. Now we will just have to wait and see how Ghana, Cameroon and Nigeria will do or a very strange occurance can be on the cards. Could it be possible that none of the teams qualified for the WC will win the CAN?

  • moe

Kazi why is it embarassing for you to lose to malawi? you think you are better than them? Why?This wasn’t a tie like ivory coast had. this was 3-0 and could have easily been 5-0.When was the last time you went to the ACN?I understand the excitement beating the African champs has given you guys a false sense of confidence even though you were so completly out played in both cairo and sudan you still allowed that lucky goal by antar to make you believe your team is more than it is.You are right about egypt we can play with any country in the world like we did in the confederation cup but we can lay an egg against lower level opponents thats why we lost to Algeria. over confidence. But losing 5 games in five years sometimes you get over confident. however the same can’t be said for algeria. they had a lucky streak of good furtune.when you are not a good team fortunes change. in other word luck can only carry you so far.I’m sorry but your reality is different from the perception that lucky goal in sudan has given you guys you have two more games unfortunately i don’t think you can beat either unless you resort back to the scared tactics used against egypt just hide in the box and hope for a lucky goal.

  • moe

We know you don’t care Koora.Thats good. you showed it today

  • super eagle

Hard luck my african brothers… you are not there yet keep your head up and keep swinging you’ll be there someday.

  • http://guinea.worldcupblog.org shane

It is hilarious reading the bitter Egyptian fan comments. Despite what happens at this tournament Algeria will be at the World Cup and Egypt won’t. No amount of bashing Algeria will change that fact.

  • http://ivorycoast.worldcupblog.org Elliott

Its clear that Algeria had an emotional letdown after beating Egypt to qualify for the World Cup – the team failed to “get in the game” until it was too late.

  • Another Moe

Moe, do you remember when Egypt beat Italy and played well with brazil then get its ass kicked by the US (3-0)you explained that with “Egypt had an off day”. You were the doormat of the confederations cup.

  • isa

Totaly dont agree that malawian goals were a fluke and i also object that Mali is better that Malawi. The team is no underdog, they have proved their mantle by strongly stopping big teams like eagyt, ghana, ivory coast, DRC, Burkinafaso, Guinea and i feel it is not sincere to rank them as minnows. They were a better side in the algeria game, outclassing them in every pass, strike, move and challenge. It is high time we accepted the reality and that is “Malawi has shaken off the underdog tag and graduated to a force that requires special recognition”.

  • izzy

i am ashamed to call my self algerian!
the boys thought so much of them selves after there win against egypt but this should be a well earned wake up call!!! they really underestimated the malawi team an were taught how to play proper football! inshallah the boys will bounce back against mali an angola an will get into the quater finals atleast!

I think the preparation was not good enough. They should have played at least a friendly to test Zaoui with Bougherra and Halliche. Not playing for two weeks is very difficult once you enter such a competition. Also, there was typical Algerian plays, that is a lot of individual plays by Saifi and one terrible I remember by Matmour. It was a shame for they did not play as a team. Mansouri always looked second on the ball and as a captain was not capable to motivate his troops. I believe Lacen would have done a much better job. It reminds us that the teams has little collective. They rely too much on individual talent, and you can not beat a team with a heart like Malawi if you rely only on talent. It will be an early exit for the Algerians. They wasted it. I do not think they can beat Mali and Angola. Three days are not enough to fill the loop holes we saw.

P.S. Saadane, for God sake, Saifi is a joker, Ziaya should start the game with Ghezzal.

  • http://No 1.2.3 viva l lagerie

Algeria will return to the field and you will see that, God willing

  • Moe

moe first of all Italy was the doormat of that group not Egypt .second of all doormat in a group with brazil Egypt Italy and USA is not the same as doormat in a group with Angola Mali Algeria Malawi . There is a slight difference between the two groups don’t you think?second of all we played with mostly backups and got robbed{…} I admit that was a shamful episode for the Egyptians .lastly you can’t compare Malawi to the USA team.every non Algerian knows and most rational algerian know Algeria is a second level team in Africa that got lucky and the algerian are Proving all the analysts right.

  • kooora

    Moe.

don’t you get it? again, we are not even a second level team.
On the other hand, be sure about one thing, our joy in life is to spank the Egyptian National team, get it, now move on.

  • http://i@i.com Mark

If Algeria lost to Malawi 3-0 and Algeria spanked the shit out of Egypt, then Malawi would definitely beat egypt. Oh wait….Malawi already did beat egypt. Nevermind.

  • Moe

my brothers do you see the difference between top tier elite African teams and second level teams….. It’s a clear diference sometimes a second level team gets lucky but when the smoke clears you see who is who….. My brother super eagle I know we have many injuries but never under estimate the pharos

  • Moe

our reality is our reality unfortunately your reality is your reality…. A lucky goal didn’t change who you are nor did it change who we are…..the African champions

  • Kazi

Jeez. Are people still making references to the Egypt game. Move on, Algerian and Egyptian alike. You’ve got bigger issues in front of you like maybe, I don’t know, qualifying for the quarter finals maybe? English people I know showed no respect for Algeria after the loss. Now is the time to rise again. Everyone is laughing at us. Time for Algeria to make them stick their feet in their mouths by moving on from this and going on to convincingly beat Mali and Angola. Credit to Malawi, you look like you will do well. Good luck to you. As for Saifi. Give the guy a break. He was one of the few trying to do something productive for the game. Yes, I do agree with the call for Ziaya to go in his place, but he isn’t rubbish. He deserves our respect.

  • Nazim Guendil

YES we messed up majorly, YES we lost against a team we were ‘expected’ and ‘supposed’ to beat and YES we are aware that Egypt did have a good opener against Nigeria…but the moral of the story is (and will always be) WE will BEAT Egypt in any competition on any given day LOL

Oh…and the fact that we are going to the World Cup and Egypt won’t ha ha We can get eliminated in the first round here (it frankly doesn’t matter) cause in a few months we will be playing in South Africa ;)

Hey Egypt! Guess who’s going to South Africa? IF you guess right…I will tell you who isn’t LOL

  • Mohab

Oi! Cut it out you guys, hard luck to the Algerians. Pull your self together and show ‘em what Arab teams are about. Egyptians, it isn’t like us to gloat. And about the Algeria-Egypt game, let it go already! And good luck to all.

  • Hany

Agree with Mohab, What’s done is done, accept it and move on. Good Luck everyone.

  • Bahaa

salam alekum ya shabab mabrook to Egypt hard luck to Algeria insha alla you do better in the next two games…..

  • Kazi

Thanks to Mohab, Hany and Bahaa. Wa 3alaykum assalam Bahaa especially you since you’ve managed to redeem yourself after gaining notoriety on this blog. But it’s all in the past. Thanks for your good wishes, good luck to Egypt as well.

  • Moe

Moe, you’re just a hardliner egyptian who think you are the best. The fact is : We beat you fair and square and we are going to the WC and you’re not. Regardless of your doormat theory, this fact stands and that is what’s bothering you. Chill out my friend, try to win the African Cup, it might calm your nerves. We have a bigger thing to worry about! Please don’t try to answer me, you’re not sane…

  • Bahaa

Kazi i didn’t realize i had a bad reputation on your blog. if i have offended anyone i apologize. it was un intentional. I have a bad habbit of talking back when sometimes I should just let it go. in any event if i crossed the line at any time I’m sorry

  • Kazi

It’s cool man, don’t worry. Like I said, it’s in the past now.

  • Ossama Mohamed

yes well we lost at home to malawi only 1-0 and you lot lost 3-0 away from malawi! keep your hopes up though you still made it to the world cup and your still not out of this cup.

  • http://aaa Adnane

Enough rubbish, I do not care about the world cup right now, and I do not care about the previous win against Egypt. The point is, that Algeria played like shit. Alright, enough of the sugar coating. Let say it firmly and honestly. We played like crap. I am disappointed like everyone else, but I appreciate the moment to learn. So let’s learn from the situation, about what we did wrong, and not do it again against England. I would not want us to get destroyed like Saudi Arabia did against Germany in 2002. It was 8-0 I think. So Saifi and all others, please be professional. Every time I see you guys trying to make some nice sexy play, instead of passing the F***in ball, I want to barf. So play like team, or you guys will put the shame on us all and enter your mommie’s and wifey’s house sooner than later.

Next game, no BS lineup. Saifi on the freaking bench, Ziaya up front. Mansouri go eat your brocolli, I want to see Lemmouchia in the midfield. Matmour, hardluck, you played like crap. Let’s try Abdoun in midfield. He deserves his chance. Bouazza did not do much, despite his best effort. Here’s my lineup.

    ___________Chaouchi__________

    Raho Bougherra Halliche Belhadj

    _____Lemmouchia Yebda_________

    Abdoun_______________Ziani

    _____Ghezzal__________
    ___________Ziaya___________

  • Kazi

Adnane you have a point, but what about Yahia and Meghni?

    My starting line-up:
    Chaouchi

    Bougherra Yahia

    Raho Belhadj

    Lemmouchia Yebda

    Meghni Ziani

    Ghezzal
    Ziaya

  • http://aaa Adnane

They are unfortunately injured and will not play the next game.

  • Ghanim

3-1 TO EGYPT I KNEW THEY GNA HIT BACK
TOO BAD FOR ALGERIA BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME

  • Kazi

Damn it. Now we need to hope this team can get to the quarter finals. It will be against either Ghana or Ivory Coast (or even Burkina Faso by the looks of things) and we will need them back. Meghni especially.

  • Marwa

So what if us algerians lost the match against malawi, doesnt mean we’re rubbish players, its because of the weather, the players trained in the cold weather in france then they came to play in 40 degrees Angola, so they were probabley just really hot, and couldnt cope with the weather, but hopefully they will try there best to win tomorrow’s match against Mali.
And a message to the Egyptians, We are going to The World Cup, SO JUST MOVE ON WITH YOUR LIFE AND GET OVER THE FACT THAT YOUR BAD LOOSERS :P !

    P.S. 1,2,3 VIVA L’ALGERIE :) !

  • http://www.malawi.worldcupblog.org sscouser

Guys, please note that football is about match-ups. How and why does a team like Man United lose to Burnley? Just because Algeria lost to Malawi doesn’t mean that the team is not good. Same with Egypt. Remember when Egypt and Malawi drew 1-1 Egyptians thought that there team was not good. Didn’t they beat Nigeria yesterday?

  • DzMouloudiaMCO

    Mabrouk alina

    Great team, spirit and soul.

  • Kazi

YES! 1-0. IT’S NOT MUCH BUT ALHAMDULILLAH WE’LL TAKE IT! Great Team work. Peace to all the people who wished luck to algeria, egyptians included! Algeria proved their worth today. Well disciplined, well organised.

  • bahaa

    Mabrook ya shabab…

  • Moe

Congrats Algeria. It was a very evenly matched game could have gone either way. Its good that you went back to your style of play defence and hope for a counter. You tried open play with Malawi you just don’t have the players for that good job by your coach knowing what works for his players. this makes for a very big game against Angola… Good luck. Hopefuly this game doesn’t give your coach false confidence again and try open play again. Anyway Good luck again.

  • DzMouloudiaMCO

    Thank you Bahaa,
Moe, So according to you Algeria can not have an open game right??
How about the BLIDA game (3-1) was it a closed game?

Moe, try to see past your loss to us, i do understand, that Egyptians are still having problems diggesting the fact that they will be watching the WC on TV. but come on, its time to move on, The joy and the happiness of most the Egyptian people for our loss to Malawi only shows that you guys are only being sore losers.

As for our loss to Malawi, i am not going to justify it but just remember that Argentina lost 5-1 to Bolivia, Egypt lost 4-1 to SA and 3-0 or 4-0 to Sudan.

One of the reasons you guys could not make it to the WC is your arrogance, and look at you talking about Algeria, and how Algeria can never have an open game, just remember that against this same Algeria, Egypt was only able to pull one win in the last 5 confrontations.

So please lets wish good luck to each others without the smart a$$ comments

  • Kazi

Thanks Moe, good luck in your next game

  • Moe

dz relax brother I’m not attacking you. I said congrats and commended your coach for knowing your teams capabilities.I’m not worried about your insults yes you beat Egypt your in the world cup you have said many time the only thing that matters to you is beating Egypt first of all thanks for the compliment second of all our teams are at different levels I think despite your qualification even you know that. Even if you don’t want to admit it. This is not about Egypt and algeria .this about our possisions in Africa . Despite your attempt at mocking I do wish you luck……….

  • DzMouloudiaMCO

Yes, Moe you guys are a different level:) if that will help you sleep at night, whatever float your boat.

your best wishes reminds me of Amro Adeeb.

    http://www.alqaheraalyoum.net/videos/playvideo.php?vid=1011e506f

    can we move on now??

  • Moe

good luck anyway if you don’t accept my good wishes that’s up to you.

  • Kazi

Khalass. Don’t have arguments when things have finally got better. DZ, they apologised and now we can move on. Amr Adeeb is an idiot, and people don’t pay attention to idiots. So just ignore him. Moe, thanks for the good wishes, good luck to Egypt in their match.

  • Moe

kazi alway a gentleman thank you sir good luck to you too. Unfortunately there are idiots on both sides.hopefuly all the Arab teams advance

  • Moe

hey some good news for you flavio just got injured.

  • Nazim Guendil

You know the world is going crazy when Algeria loses against Malawi of all teams by a three goal margin, we then beat Mali who’s supposed to be the strongest of the three and finally Bahaa is suddenly a gentleman making peace with every Algerian….What’s next???? Saifi scoring one of the bazillion chances he’s had so far? (one can hope…)

P.S. I agree what’s been already reported on DZfoot.com Still trying to figure out why on earth we haven’t replaced some of the injured players…I might be in the minority here but do we lack talent at the front? A total lack of originality! Ghezzal seems sluggish to me! It seems all our goals have been scored by our defenders so far (Frankly, I don’t care how we score as long as we do score and win) but our front sometimes looks very….dull. I don’t sound like a’ Debbie downer’ here but I hope Ziaya will prove that his call up was deserved eventually…I do realize he’s played very little and needs time to adapt (if we have any time left at this point!) – Not going to start the whole Lacen discussion all over again nut I just feel we need some new and fresh faces at the front…

  • Nazim Guendil

I say Adnane should coach the team and pick the team himself (….erm or not)

  • Nazim Guendil

@ Sscouser, I think you’re missing the point here. It’s all about expectation rather match ups. Everyone expected Algeria and Egypt to beat Malawi (Not that they should or would) ‘E.x.p.e.c.t’ being the operative word here. United was expected to beat Burnley and were also expected to beat Leeds two weeks ago in the FA cup but they crashed out. I reckon you should always beat teams you’re ‘expected’ to beat as this sets a benchmark…something by which you can measure the success and progression of the team. Right now, I think our team is fresh and rather creative knowing the circumstances and the short period of time we had to regroup but there again I am biased (being Algerian).. .Anyone Neutral would say that Algeria has been somewhat inconsistent which I hope will soon change once we beat Angola and progress to the next stage (I hope!)

Again, I don’t want you to misunderstand my comment…I have lots of respect for any team in the tournament but I am just saying it’s all about expectation and consistency! (Again, Malawi beat us but lost to Angola…sporadic to say the least). Does this translate into real life? Probably not! ‘cause it’s all subjective! I think Both Malawi and Gabon have clarified this…

Thanks for your comment though…it’s always interesting and refreshing to hear other supporters (from different countries as it ‘grounds’ us a bit LOL). I would wish you good luck but I can’t since we don’t want you to beat Mali especially if we draw against Angola (in which case we want Mali to beat you guys then we would go through because of the tiebreaker)

  • http://aaa Adnane

Ghezzal is not a number 9, he is more like a 9 and half, he is better when he plays behind a real number 9 like Ziaya or Djebbour. He runs a lot and put a lot of pressure on defenders. I like him very much. Between him and Saifi, I choose him anytime. He is also more humble and hardworking.

Now let’s hope that they improve their plays for next game against Angola. They will play against 11 men + a referee + the crowd. They can not afford to loose as much the ball in the midfield as they did today.

  • http://aaa Adnane

    HAHAHA, sa7a Nassim.

  • Bahaa

Nazim I was a gentleman and made peace with everyone before the Mali game just go back and look. After the Malawi game and the Nigeria game I came on your blog said hardluck and said inshalla you will win the next two games….. My dad past away ten days ago and it put things in perspective. Even when I talked trash in the past there was no hate in it just some friendly trash talk with no malice at least from my end. I know you really don’t know me but I would never wish bad on anybody especially not a fellow Arab and Muslim this was just soccer to me just sport and maybe it’s because I grew up here in the states but talking trash is part of it. If my being on your blog bothers I swear I won’t come here again.I was just glad this ACN came at a perfect time to help me heal a bit.Again I’m sorry if you took any of my past comments as more than just friendly shit talk…..Salam ya shabab

  • Nazim Guendil

Bahaa…My condolences on your father’s passing.

  • Nazim Guendil

@ Adnane- We need somone like tassfaout if you remember him? Though I always thought Hafid did better with The MCO than he did with the national team…Then I found out he’s got the biggest goal tally of all Algerian striker!? What do I know LOL

We need someone who’s clinical in the box…We surely can’t rely on defender to score in every game, can we?

  • http://aaa Adnane

Bahaa, all my condolences to you and your family. I feel your pain.
    Salam.

  • DzMouloudiaMCO

    Bahaa
All my condolences to you and your family.

Bahaa. My most sincere condolences to you and your family. Inna Lilahi wa Ina Ilayhi Rajioun. I know exactly what it feels like. My father passed away June 2009. I hope the best for you and your family, and may Allah (S.W.T) give you and your family the strength to move on.
